Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺南藝術大學 === 博物館學與古物維護研究所 === 103 === Museums have little understanding of the needs of the hearing impaired, as a result, sign language interpretation becomes the main service provided to the hearing impaired with very few alternatives. The study investigated the willingness of the hearing impaired to participate in museum activities and the factors influencing their participation willingness. Based on literature related to museum service and participation willingness, the study compiled factors that influenced participation willingness from three perspectives: individual, society, and museum. Through individual interviews, focus groups, and questionnaires, data was collected from participants of the study, i.e. the hearing impaired in Kaohsiung City and their assisting partners.
From the three perspectives of individual, society, and museum, the study discovered and summed up seven factors that influenced the participation willingness of the hearing impaired in museum activities: 1) personal interests, 2) experience, 3) someone available to attend activities with, 4) time available for leisure activities, 5) impacts of social change, 6) museums’ exhibition and display, and 7) museums’ management and personnel. The findings of the study suggested that the hearing impaired in different ages were willing to participate in museum activities; the level of participation willingness varied depending on whether their needs could be met. Individual related factors had the greatest influence on the participation willingness of the hearing impaired.
