It has the advances of module structure combination and customization. In addition, it has the effect for improving runoff infiltration and water purification, and therefore has been widely used in the tree pit beside the road. US EPA’s studies showed the tree box filters can reduce 96% of runoff peak flow but only can remove 35-60% of nutrients in water. Moreover, the multi-soil-layering system (MSL) is an on-site treatment technology that developed in Japan to treat the domestic sewage. This system has many advantages such as completely natural materials that will not cause environmental pollution, small construction area, low maintenance costs and so on. Our research indicates the MSL can reduce at least 90% of NH3-N and total phosphorus. Hence, applying the MSL to improve the effectiveness of tree box filters is worthy of study.
Two series of experiments were carried out using a self-development apparatus in this study. The first experiment is tree box filters with gravel permeable layer and the other is use MSL to replace the gravel permeable layer. The results show that the system with gravel permeable layer have the performance of SS、NH3-N、TP and COD reducing the rate of 84.9%、45.0%、-2.5% and 68.3%, two layers of MSL for SS、NH3-N、TP and COD reducing the rate of 77.0%、53.1%、60.5% and 68.7% , three layers of MSL for SS、NH3-N、TP and COD reducing the rate of 79.5%、60.5%、57.1% and 79.0% and four layers of MSL for SS、NH3-N、TP and COD reducing the rate of 82.6%、58.9%、51.8% and 73.5%. It is obvious that the plant box filter with MSL system has a better performance on TP remove than that the plant box filter without MSL system.
