Previous research indicated that the majority of the errors have been associated with diagonal but not orthogonal orientations. To explore human behaviors about radial selections by finger sliding on touch screens, two experiments were conducted. First, two manipulation orientations (horizontal and vertical) of tablet were designed for the radial selection. Second, four radial menus were designed with different amount of selections (8, 9, 10, and 12) evenly separated with each other for the radial selection. Data about finger sliding were collected from 40 participants for analysis. The Signal Detection Theory (SDT) was applied to define the thresholds between any two adjacent radial selections. Results showed that the lengths of finger sliding in orthogonal directions as well as the angles of finger sliding in diagonal directions were significantly affected by the manipulation orientations of tablet. Furthermore, the variations of angles for sliding to diagonal directions were significant larger than the variations to orthogonal directions for the four radial menus. Compared to the intuitive even setting of radial selection thresholds, thresholds defined by the SDT could significantly reduce selection errors. The findings and methods in this study could be applied to the design of TV radial menus controlled by finger sliding on tablets. 梁曉帆 學位論文 ; thesis zh-TW
