Jhonghe Community Development Association in Taichung Nantun District was established in 1993.Mr. Su Mingsong , as the chairman during 1993~2013,devoted himself to the various community activities and had created a positive and fruitful, repeated successes. In this study, we try to find the key factors of the successful community building, taking Jhonghe Community Development Association as a case.
After literature review, we had used semi-structured interviews method to visit nine members of Jhonghe Community Development Association, including the incumbent president, directors and supervisors, the Director-General, secretaries, team leader, volunteers and community residents. We explored the course and the present status of Community Development promotion in Jhonghe Community , and how the leaders can succeed by continue use the past resources and community characteristics. The leadership style of the Jhonghe Community Development Association also had influence on community development and its future planning.
After participation, observation and interviews, the researcher found that key factors of the success in Jhonghe Community Development Association are: a leader with high degree of ambition and leadership, team members with spontaneous division and cooperation of the work equipped with a full-time secretary, an excellent proposal after exerting the community strengths, a wonderful vision with clear goals and strategies.
Sustainable effort is necessary for the community development and the community building is also a long-term project. Without an institutional system, it is impossible to maintain a solid unchanged status. In addition to funding, talent is another important issue in developing a successor regime in the community. To build a succession system can achieve a long-term community development.
After community building in Jhonghe Community, the community cohesion awareness of their own residential communities have a better sense of identity, and inspire the community to create sustained momentum. Equipped with the power,we believe they can face and solve the difficulties in the future. After all, we made the following recommendations: first, the Community Development Association and should train local professionals. Second, the community leaders reserve related capabilities is necessary. Third, packaging and marketing the results of the team community building characteristics is helpful for the transmission of knowledge. Last, public sector should set up a coordination unit or evaluation indicator for Community Development Association and the community .
