Among all national scenic areas in Taiwan, the Sun Moon Lake National Scence Area (SMLNSA) is the most famous for its unique scenic as a magnet. Recently, the number of tourists to SMLNSA is rising promptly to the highest place. However, the huge number of visitors brings a challenge to SMLNSA not only in physical and social attributes but also in management. Moreover, it also impacts visitors’ experience indirectly. Obtaining restorative experience (e.g., to ease pressure, to be close to nature) is always a main motivation for visitors to take part in recreational activities, and such experience is closely related to recreation settings visitors choose. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the influence of recreation settings on visitors’ perception of restoration. The recreation settings in this study were selected from the Lakeside Recreation System of SMLNSA. Water and land recreation opportunities spectrum (WALROS) was used as a tool to assess the degree of development for each of the eight recreation sites selected. The assessment incorporates physical, social and management attributes from WALROS. The result showed that the eight recreation sites were allotted to four recreation settings including urban, suburban, rural-developed, and rural-natural. Data were collected from on-site questionnaire survey in eight recreation sites with a convenient sampling procedure. Subjects were the on-site tourists with reading and expressing skills. A total of 354 valid questionnaires were obtained. Descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation were employed for data analyses. The results showed that, visitors in different recreation settings could get corresponding experience. In different recreation settings, visitors could not feel different restorative perception. Visitors’ experience in different recreational class has significant relationship with restorative perception. Recommendations on planning for the future scope scale-up is the region should follow the WALROS to plan the traffic and the accessibility; During the planning and development process, planners should follow and retain physical attributes the most, namely, the natural resources and landscape; Landscape planning and design need to follow the WALROS framework to fit the landscape aesthetics, and enhance the visitors’ restorative perception.
