Summary: | 碩士 === 東海大學 === 建築學系 === 103 === As the concept of "Alternative Spaces" emerged since the opening of Taipei Fine Arts Museum in the 90’s, the relationship between art and cities in Taiwan can be divided into three categories: (1) permanent public art settings, (2) temporary art projects, and (3) flagship cultural programs; Among the three categories, the (2) temporary art projects can be further divided into three objectives: (a) the reuse of lost spaces, (b) new public art in focusing on social issues, and (c) the use of alternative space for studio and/or exhibition by the artists. These have shown an inseparable relationship between the revolution of Alternative Space, and the development of the contemporary art in Taiwan. In recent years, although the industries for cultural and creativity has become a trend, its main emphasis has been the commercial sales instead of the energy of artistic creation.
This study will use "Alternative Space" as the view point to further discuss the use of space, operational modes, exhibition/performance, and research projects related to the city relations. The main subjects will be focused at the ZhongXin Market Arts Settlement and Freedom Men Art Apartments. Additionally, there has been an operation group as the Stock 20, the public sector operation that possessed character of Alternative Space. The data collection and analysis will be done via personal interviews, mapping, and field observation records.
There are few discoveries in the case studies. 1. The ZhongXin Market Arts Settlement has several main projects as "Blackandwhite 62" (黑白切)、"Z Space" (Z書房)、"Present Cafe"(奉咖啡); these operations are usually based on non-profit art exhibition with the elaborating approach to the original spaces in the market, which makes the ZhongXin Market as an entire art settlement as a study group for analysis. 2. The Freedom Men Art Apartments is located within the aligned townhouse complex; its vertical use of space has been one of the biggest strengths. The buildings connected by the open patio have multi-functional utilizations for art exhibition, education, and artist-in-residence programs. Furthermore, its operational costs are supported by the users and government grants, which changed the former stereotypes among the Alternative Spaces as anti-systematic.
As the operation group for Stock 20, it is operated via private teams hired by public departments. Despite Stock 20 have multiple functions as art exhibition, theater, and artist-in-residence programs, it is facing crucial transformation due to various obstacles, including reduced public funding, complicated property rights/responsibilities, and negative affects by the recent high-speed railroad construction.
According to the research result, it appears that the development of Alternative Spaces in Taichung City still has room for growth in terms of distribution and quantity compared to Taipei City and Kaohsiung City. However, the case studies showed the following conclusion: (1) each case study has its own perspective and strategies in coping with the demands in the neighborhood, and these factors exactly reflected upon the developmental stages of Alternative Spaces in Taiwan. From the earlier concepts as "anti-commercial" to grant-funded operation by individual artists, it appears that Taiwan has entered the period of post-Alternative Space. (2) Although Alternative Space has been operated individually, most of them are located in the old-fashioned settings, such as traditional local market, low-cost townhouses and railroad warehouses. These phenomena not only reflected upon the flexibility of Alternative Space, but also provided these decaying spaces a new vibe. (3) As time goes by, the concept of Alternative Space has given flexible tolerance with its operational methods to the artists; whether it’s anti-funding, cooperative with multiple artists, or the semi-alternative art space made of warehouse, they all fulfill the purpose of the concept as "alternative".
