In campus, the computer classrooms are generally air-conditioned which facilitate the accumulation of potential air pollutants that in turn jeopardize the studying environment and health of students. This study surveyed 9 computer classrooms in 7 elementary schools at eastern Pintung area for CO2, O3, PM10, PM2.5 and TVOC to establish the variation of IAQ, in terms of air change per hour (ACH), between summer and winter times, between indoors and outdoors, and between weekdays and days off. The result indicated that the indoor CO2 concentration depends significantly on ACH. In the air-conditioned computer classrooms with relatively lower ACH (0.47-1.58), the CO2 concentration tends to exceed the acceptable level before the end of class. On the other hand, in the naturally-ventilated computer classrooms with higher ACH (1.98-19.03), the CO2 concentration does not raise significantly. As for the O3 concentration, the continuous monitoring data indicated that the indoor O3 originated at outdoor, therefore, the O3 level in the air-conditioned computer classrooms, or classrooms with door-closed during summer time, is lower than that in the naturally-ventilated computer classrooms. Overall speaking, some of the investigated computer classrooms exhibited O3 level exceeding the acceptable level. In terms of particulate matter exposure, the PM10 of all investigated computer classrooms, before noon, during winter times, and PM2.5 of 8 investigated computer rooms all exceed the standard acceptable level. Regarding the volatile organic compound (VOC) emission, sampled by collecting air in a stainless canister, the data indicated that while the detected level of benzene of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) volatile aromatics is the highest, the level of total volatile organic compound (TVOC) detected is within the healthy range. The findings of this study suggested that, through studying in the computer classrooms, the elementary school students were exposed to potentially hazardous level of air pollutants including CO2, O3, PM10 and PM2.5 that are linkable to their eyes, respiratory tract and immune system illness, and this warrants further investigation. The findings of this study can be used as guidelines for improving the indoor air quality of computer classrooms.
