碩士 === 世新大學 === 廣播電視電影學研究所(含碩專班) === 103 === “The Floating Father” is about a middle aged man(old Cheng) who encounters obstacles in facing his father’s leaving and the journey of self realization. The wooden boat that his father kept repairing not only symbolizes one’s dream and belief but also indicates leaving for a journey and floating life. The boat made a crucial influence to the character and identity of the protagonist, old Cheng. Through Sigmund Freud’s interpretation of dream, the film explores the true meaning within the dream and seeks out the inner fear of the old Cheng. Also, through Jacques Lacan's mirror stage theory, the film presents the relationship between father and son, especially an absent father’s impact on a child.The title, “The Floating Father”, indicates old Cheng’s life-long searching of his father, seeking for the shore where he and his father could stop by and reach their peace of mind.
