"London Pieces" includes three pieces: Chelsea Reach, Ragamuffin, and Soho Forenoons.This thesis analyzed the process of the compositional elements such as backgrounds, forms, piano techniques and musical expressions. Ireland was one of the most important and representative composers of the United Kingdom in the twentieth century.In his early stage, he was influenced by Brahms, and then was influenced by Impressionism, and its refined sound effect. Later, his music was based on traditional harmonic process of the Romanticism.Ireland broke restrictions of existing composition rules for presenting his ideal musical elements, and developed his unique style. The inspiration of "London Pieces" came from the city “Chelsea", which was full of humanity and fine art, and the city "Soho", was famous for delicacies and recreations, and contained multiracialism and multicultural.Through understanding the culture and surrounding, Ireland's representation of his music can be realized. This essay mainly divides into three parts; the first part is about Ireland's life and music style.His composing process includes three periods: Brahms, Impressionistic, and self-exploring period.In the second part, through Ireland's representative piece "London Pieces", compositional background, expression, musical structure, tone and harmony, melodic materials were analyzed.The third part is analysis and interpretation. "London Pieces" is written in Ireland's self-exploring period, these pieces fully represent Ireland's own musical style and representation of his compositional technique.
