碩士 === 東吳大學 === 日本語文學系 === 103 === This thesis is mainly a study about the differences between Japanese and Chinese translation, focus on greetings and indirection expression. By researching cultural differences, translation shouldn’t made a distinction between “literal translation” and “free translation”. Regardless of “literal translation” or “free translation”, transmitting the correct meanings to reader is “correct translation”. In case of ignoring cultural differences, transmitting the incorrect meanings to reader is ‘incorrect translation’. Next, focused on greetings and indirection expression of example which is common in Japanese textbook. Because Chinese greetings is dislike Japanese have homogeneity, and seldom used indirect expression to transmit the true meanings. If translation is sticker for formal, the results make reader confused. Nature of translation is corresponding with concept, not words. Most important is researching for “correct translation” between cultural differences. This thesis includes five chapters, summarized as follows: Chapter one exhibits the motives of the study and its purposes, the research scope and methodology. Chapter two first discusses problems aroused from two kinds of translation—“literal translation ” and “free translation” which are derived from previous researches; and also the famous translator Yian-Fu’s three translation criteria – the “faithful, expressive, and graceful” attitude. In chapter three, it’s a discussion about the culture differences between Japanese and Chinese societies. In chapter four, the content focus on greetings and indirection expression through the practice of translation. Final chapter five is the conclusion based on the overall observation of the phenomenon in two societies. Besides, the author’s personal translation suggestions are included. Following the chapters are the references.
