Description
Summary:碩士 === 東吳大學 === 日本語文學系 === 103 === Yasunari Kawabata (1899-1972) was one of the representative writers during the Taisho period and the Showa period. Many of his works are classic. Three of his works, “Yama no Oto”, “Sleeping Beauty”, and “One Arm”, had all been written in the postwar period. Although they are independent works, the leading characters in them are similar. And these three books are all about a man trying to contact a woman in a special space and the resulted processes of recollection and dreaming. This study focused on these three books and explored the characteristics of the spaces in Kawabata’s literature in the postwar period from the viewpoint of these three books. In the Kawabata’s literature in the postwar period, descriptions of moving from a “real space” to an “isolated space” are very common. Examples include the yard of the Ogata family, the room of the sleeping beauty, and the room inside the apartment. One of the major issues discussed in this study is the processes of recollection and dreaming of the female leading characters caused by these changes in spaces. In order to find out the influences of the chances in spaces on the novels in Kawabata’s literature in the postwar period, this study emphasized on the main theme of spaces and analyzed the different characters of the spaces in these three books. The focus of this study was on the spaces in “Yama no Oto”, “Sleeping Beauty”, and “One Arm”. The effects of the spaces were explored from three aspects: arrangements of changes in spaces, interpersonal relationships in spaces, spaces and recollection – dreaming, for the purpose of examining the positions and characteristics of spaces in Kawabata’s literature in the postwar period.
