Fully demonstrating local characteristics, the dizi pieces Air of Qinchuan and Four Movements of Shanbei incorporate the elements of the famous regional Qinqiang operas, the much loved “Errentai” dramas (song-and-dance duet of Inner Mongolia), and the widely sung “Xintianyu” mountain songs (a folk music style from Xaanxi province). This paper introduces the three major elements and summarizes the performing features of the two dizi pieces to further analyze them. The notes outline the stretches of mountains and depict the vastness of land. The rhythms imitate local people’s unaffectedness and the intonations of narrative and musical performance. The emotional articulations in the pieces deeply enter and closely connect human hearts, evoking mutual understanding between people in different places. The images of the pieces extend across the entire region, affording players and listeners to travel in Xaanxi in their mind as if they were playing the roles in a story.
