Studies have shown that leisure activities that junior high school students participate generally tend to be indoor patterns, which have influenced their wellness. Leisure attitude and habit of adolescence are essential for their choice and preference in later adulthood and therefore leisure education within school curricula has played an important role in this process. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of leisure attitude, leisure participation and perceived freedom in leisure after taking leisure education courses for junior high school students. Second graders of three classes enrolled in Kaohsiung Municipal Mituo junior high school participated in a pre/post experiment where a 14-week theme-oriented leisure education courses was implemented in the scout class. Paired t-test was used to assess pre and post treatment differences. It was found that junior high school students experienced positive leisure attitude and perceived freedom in leisure while leisure participation, both diversity and intensity, is still underrepresented, with entertainment-oriented being more active and knowledge- and cultural-based being less active. In addition, after taking 14-week theme-oriented leisure education courses, there was a significant increase in leisure attitude, perceived freedom in leisure and participation in sport-based and social-based activities.
