According to the statistics from the Ministry of Finance, the number of groups in the industry has grown 85% between 2008 and 2013. In considering capital structure and years of operation in 2013, music and performing arts groups with capital less than NT$1 million accounted for 68% and groups of over ten years of operation accounted for 18%. As indicated, the majority of local performing arts groups are young, and of small to medium size. Under the highly competitive environment, it is important that performing arts groups think of better business strategies to achieve sustainable development. In fact, the success of those benchmarking performing arts groups of over ten years of operation is not by chance. They have gone through many challenges when organizing different stages of development such as what strategies the mangers used in breaking through their challenges to move forward. All these experiences are well worth the successors to learn from. In this study, four performing arts groups that have over 15 years of development in Taiwan and have continuously been awarded with good rating by the Ministry of Culture were selected, including Paper Windmill Theater, Sun Son Theater, Puppet & Its Double Theater, and Open Theater Group. The methods of case study and interviews were used in this study to investigate the different organization structures in the life cycle of the object groups and the situational factors that affect organizational development and managers’ strategy manipulation. This study found out that among all situational factors that affect organizational design, the relationship between the organizational life cycle and the adopted strategy is the most significant. There are different stages in the organizational structure evolution: simple structure, functional structure, long-term development goals, and divisional structure or modular structure. This sequence has also verified the viewpoint of “structure follows strategies”. Lastly, this study has proposed recommendations to the performing arts groups on organizational development and planning hoping to serve as a reference to the managers of the performing arts groups.
