Sidewalks in Vietnam are not used by pedestrians only, it also supports economic development as it is a key area for street vendors. Factors including traffic, society, economy, and environment diversified the function of sidewalks in Vietnam, but the diversification eventually caused misuse and disorder of sidewalks. In recent years, the Vietnamese government focus on improving the sidewalk in Ho Chi Minh City, but the effect is not obvious. This research addresses particular elements of sidewalks that limit the Vietnam sidewalk usage and Nguyen Tri Phuong Street in Ho Chi Minh City is chosen as a study subject. The purpose of this research is to understand and examine the relationships between the factors that caused disorder on the street and users' behavior to better understand how sidewalks function and serve as public space. Few researches have been conducted to understand the factors that cause disorder. This thesis aims to decipher and provide sufficient data to understand how to plan sidewalks at the city level in order to recommend policies and practices that are suitable in terms of local culture in Vietnam, pedestrian need and to better plan sidewalks for public space, creating a win-win situation for all parties that are using the sidewalks.
