Wang I-Yu's oeuvre includes instrumental solos, chamber music, and large-scale orchestral pieces. Through these works, he has risen in prominence as a composer in recent years. This thesis thoroughly investigates his 2012 concerto for Dizi, "Kuyi's Love (Lalualumedani)." It explores how this freelance music creator took his original concept, and through an Eastern musical idiom, used his unique compositional techniques to give shape to his own particular style. The result is a persuasive musical work that has received broad audience acclaim.
Few articles deal with the compositions of Wang I-Yu, and most that do give him only a cursory mention. Besided his Erhu concerto, "The Blue Planet - Earth," for which dissertations have been written exploring its compositional techniques and interpretation, his works have not been widely discussed academically. Chapters three and four of this thesis focus on the compositional analysis and interpretation of "Kuyi's Love: (Lalualumedani)." Chapter two discusses Wang's musical aesthetic and musical knowledge as a secondary topic. Through an interview with the composer, which allowed me to more deeply understand his musical vision, I have researched his compositional techniques, moreover reflecting on his practice of sound expression. As a result, I was able to implement this deeper understanding into my recital performance.
