But in this environment, Tosti (Francesco Paolo Tosti, 1846-1916) did not write operas, however he in steed of art songs. These art songs wee of such quality that he earned the nickname the "Italian Schubert." (Franz Schubert, 1797-1828) Meanwhile, Tosti also integrated a Nepolitan style into his art songs, giving them a unique character. This study examine eight French art songs which composed by Tosti between 1884 and 1911. The first chapter contains research motivation, scope, methodology as well as a brief description of the bel canto. The second chapter will introduce the composer's life and his composition style. The third chapter looks at the poetry of the selected art songs. The final chapter gives an analysis and guide to interpretation of the selected art songs.
