Funeral rites and customs are related to the life philosophy of an ethnic group and the human perspective. An individual`s death affects all who were associated with that individual. In Taiwanese society, funeral rites and customs have changed over time and have been influenced by elements of Chinese and Western culture and the trend toward customized funeral services. It is only religion that separates them. The unique funeral rites and customs of Taiwan`s indigenous peoples have also changed with the shift in government policies and the introduction of outside religions. From historical records, since the Japanese occupation era (1895-1945), traditional funeral rites and customs have disappeared or have been modified or adapted. Current rites and customs may have been &auot;borrowed&auot; from the Japanese or southern Chinese ethnic groups. However, the Puyuma people assume that after death one becomes an ancestral spirit, akin to a partial deity. Therefore, providing offerings and worshipping the ancestral spirits have long been at the core of Puyuma beliefs. The main target of this research is the Puyuma (Nanwang) community. The motivation for this research is two-fold. First, the author is a member of the Pinuyumayan nation from the Puyuma (Nanwang) community. Second, the author was inspired to think about the interaction between Puyuma society and funeral rites due to the loss of close family members. The aim of this thesis is through the observation of contemporary funeral rites and norms, and under the influence of religious beliefs and mainstream societal expectations, to explore the images of death held by the Puyuma residents of the Nanwang Community and the norms associated with life and death. Under the current diverse funeral culture, what do the Puyuma residents of the Nanwang Community consider are traditional practices? How do the Puyuma residents of the Nanwang Community view their own funeral culture?
