Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺東大學 === 公共與文化事務學系區域政策與發展研究碩士班 === 103 === In this study, a qualitative research approach was adopted. Using semi-structured interview, observation, and document analysis, this study investigated the parenting style in families where the father is Taiwanese and the mother is a new inhabitant from Southeast Asian nations. The objectives of this study were to: (1) explore the composition and current conditions of four families, in each of which the mother is a new inhabitant and the child has high learning achievements in Tian-Ye Elementary School in South District of Hualien County; (2) investigate the school life adaptation of these four students; (3) analyze the parenting styles in these four families. The research field was located in Yuli Township, South District of Hualien County. The subjects included four new inhabitant-born children with high learning achievements in school, their parents, and seven teachers of these students. Of the four mothers of these students, two came from Indonesia and two from Vietnam. Findings obtained from analysis of interview responses and related data were summarized into 10 conclusions in two dimensions, including the school life adaptation of the new inhabitant-born students with high learning achievements and the parenting style of their parents. 1. The school life adaptation of the new inhabitant-born students with high learning achievements: (1) All the four students adapted well to school life, and their overall performance in academic and technical disciplines was also good. (2) All the four students were good in terms of moral conduct. They were respectful of teachers, pleased to help others, easy-going, and would not be the one to trigger any argument. (3) All the four students had developed their ways of learning based on the guidance of their teachers and parents. (4) All the four students were active in learning and attentive in class. They would seek answers whenever they had any question and did not have the habit of procrastination. 2. The parenting styles of the parents of these new inhabitant-born students with high learning achievements: (1) Their parents stressed manners, ethics, and respect for teachers in parenting. (2) Their parents adopted an authoritative parenting style. (3) Their parents prioritized whether they could spend more time with children among the factors affecting their job choice. (4) Their parents led their children to respect and accept people from different cultures and ethnic groups based on personal experiences. (5) Their parents would accompany them in doing and reviewing homework based on a joint-reading approach. (6) Their parents would participate in all kinds of parent-child activities and parenting courses and actively communicate with teachers to maintain a good teacher-parent relationship. Based on the above conclusions, this study also provided suggestions to new-inhabitant parents, schools, and education authorities. The suggestions covered how to assist new inhabitant-born students in learning and what supportive parenting courses can be planned for their parents.
