Since visual effects are more important than accuracy, especially for games, this means that it is meaningful to develop a simple and easy to implement model for real-time soft body simulations. The purpose of this study is proposes a simple structure based on the Mass-Spring System to provide a real-time solution for soft body simulations with shape retaining.
The proposed 2D structures employ two closely coupled layers; the outer layer adopts springs to connect all the vertices of the simulated object based on the Mass-Spring System. And the inner layer connects deferent joints to a rigid body which is smaller and same shape with outer structure. This two-tier structure is connected with these three different springs, and the softness of the soft body is controlled by the damping ratio and frequency ratio of these three joints.
This study applies the soft body structure in plane geometric shapes, such as triangle, square, pentagonal, hexagonal and circle. The rigid body of outer layer can not only provide whole body collision, but also can avoid mutual penetration between each bodies. The rigid bodies of inner layer and its joints provide soft body itself elastic. This study employs the soft body structure in children learning planar geometry of teaching materials in practice, and hope this study could be provided to the relevant investigator as reference.
