Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺北教育大學 === 兒童英語教育學系碩士班 === 103 === This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of English cartoon-teaching instruction on Taiwanese 5th graders’ English word recognition and world cultural knowledge. Forty-eight 5th graders from an elementary school in New Taipei City participated in this study for 12 weeks, forty minutes per week. Research data were collected through pre- and post- English word recognition tests, pre- and post- world cultural knowledge tests and a questionnaire of learning English and world cultural knowledge via English cartoons, which were analyzed with paired-sample t test and percentage counting.
The study results revealed that English cartoon-teaching instruction significantly improved Taiwanese 5th graders’ world cultural knowledge and their English word recognition, especially on the connection of form-and-meaning. Furthermore, the participants highly evaluated English cartoon-teaching instruction and expressed very positive feedback towards it. The cultural topics impressed them most are those concerning foods and special cuisines in different countries, significant geographic features, and unique local customs and social norms.
Finally, based on the results of this study, some suggestions for English teaching and further studies concerning similar topics are provided.
