Abstract
The study investigated the current status of 5th-6th grade students’ perceptions of their PE teachers' leadership style and attitude toward physical education in New Taipei City. Furthermore, it also analyzed the relationship between PE teachers' leadership style and students’ attitude with different background variables. This study regarded the 5th-6th graders in New Taipei City in 103rd academic year as subjects. A questionnaire of “Survey Questionnaire for the 5th-6th Graders of Elementary Schools on Perceiving PE Teachers' Leadership Style and Students’ Attitude toward Physical Education” was designed as tool. 540 copies of questionnaire were distributed, with 351 valid samples. The data were processed and analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent same t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson’s product-moment correlation. The conclusions are:
1. The perceptions of PE teachers' transformational leadership style and transactional leadership style of the 5th-6th grade students at elementary schools in New Taipei City were above average. Teachers preferred displaying transformational leadership style to displaying transactional leadership style.
2. The 5th-6th grade students’ attitude toward physical education in New Taipei City tended to be positive, appearing in the order of cognitive domain, affective domain, and behavior intention domain.
3. Participants in higher grade, with female PE teachers, or from medium-sized elementary schools could well perceive PE teachers’ transformational leadership style. However, students from medium-sized elementary schools could well perceive transactional leadership style.
4. Male students, higher graders, or students from medium-sized elementary schools got more positive attitude toward physical education.
5. There was a significant correlation between PE teachers’ leadership style and students’ attitude toward physical education.
In the end, suggestions were given in accordance with the conclusions as the references for school administrators, teachers and future researchers.
