And thus, the design and configuration of public space should take into account gender equality to create a friendly and comfortable transit place and an environment free from gender bias. From women’s perspective, this research aims to achieve a better understanding of the fear in MRT space and offer concrete planning suggestions for the current Taiwan MRT space. The primary research focus is on the source, content and impact of fear. To understand the inner feelings of female passengers, in-depth interviews with six females have been conducted. Based on the content and results of the interviews, questionnaire is designed and investigation is then carried out using purposive sampling technique. Our study found that the fear of female passengers of MRT mainly originate from two aspects, namely environmental factors and man-made environmental factors. However, personal background such as gender division of labor, past experience of domestic violence, personal experience, levels of education and a sense of crisis and victimization risk will also affect the level of fear. Through ANOVA, significant difference has been found between the level of women's education and the level of fear of sexual harass and abuse in MRT space. The content of fear can be classified into seven factors. Ranking from low to high level of fear, they are crowded station, distance to other people, crowded carriage, being watched, unfamiliar environment, enclosed space, and dark environment. It is also found that women express their concerns over stations without personnel, surveillance systems, or multitude of public spaces when they are alone. In future, the ministry of transport can take into account the seven factors of fear investigated in this research for the design of MRT space. In addition, the configurations of the personnel monitoring system and the crisis notification systems as well as the educational propaganda can also be taken into consideration to achieve a better improvement in the planning of the MRT space.
