The changes of chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) and sea surface temperatures (SST) were measured by using NASA’s Aqua satellite equipped Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) is also considered to explain changes of sea surface characteristics during periods of El Niño and La Niña. The investigation shows that the shores of Japanese Islands have a higher Chl-a for the entire year, it is pretty obvious in the spring season, the Chl-a is at its peak in the vicinity of the Oyashio. As for the Kuroshio area the Chl-a is low all year round, and it covers a wide range with smaller spatial variation. The SST displayed a seasonal change, at its highest in the summer season, which is around August and September. It’s at the lowest in winter season, which appears in February and March. The SST changes according to seasonal and latitudinal changes, it decreases from south to north. The level of SST change is apparent, it is relatively small in the Kuroshio area, but relatively big in Oyashio area.
