Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺南大學 === 戲劇創作與應用學系碩士班 === 103 === The year 2009, which happens to be the 125th anniversary of the Sino-French War, has witnessed the debut of The Legend of Sino-French War in Tamsui, in the form of environmental theater in Tamsui Art & Culture Festival, which has since then become an annual event in October. This theatrical work, adapted from historic events, with the historical battlegrounds as its performing space, recreates the ancient war scenes, in which the local people also participate to play their ancestors. The success of this performance has made it part of the repertoire from 2009 to 2013, with the exception of 2012. That year, the theatrical performance, called The Amazing Journey of Tamsui, incorporates a condense plot from The Legend of Sino-French War in Tamsui with three mythological stories, and some local celebrities’ anecdotes. More importantly, the audience move from one famous local scenic spot to another with the actors moving to different performing sites, creating a unique theatre experience. In addition, this art festival differs from those numerous festivals in Taiwan by bringing local people together through their participation in actor training, rehearsals, and performance. This study examines how these two works are able to create a sense of local uniqueness, shape the city’s subjectivity, and become important cultural assets of Tamsui through the representation of local history, the use of performing space, and the involvement of local people as actors. In addition, this study explores how this art festival revives and turns Tamsui into an important place with its cultural and historical memories by reconstructing the narratives of the war in the performance. Then, the study investigates how the tourism promotion and marketing strategies of the art festival may compromise or subtly change the values of local uniqueness as proposed by the festival itself. Finally, this research attempts to propose ways of connecting local people with the performances and festival as well as looks into several problems caused by the changes of cultural policies and the promotion of tourism.
