A quasi-experimental design was adopted as the methodology. The object of study was targeted to fourth-one junior high eighth graders of two classes on Kouhu township in Yunlin County. The two classes are divided into the experimental geoup and control group. One class carried on the cooperative learning method for the experimental class,and the other class carried on traditional teaching. The instructional design for this study was investigate the efforts of the cooperative learning approach of Student Teams Achievement Division(STAD) on the mathematics studies academic achievement. The mathematics textbook(volume 3) of junior high school published by Nan-E were used as the teaching materials. The math scores of the first monthly exam at first semester for first grate were used as a pre-test.The pre-test implemented and attitude toward the performance in studying Mathematics before the teaching experiment was used to understand students’ entry behavior, and thereference data by which experimental class was divided into groups. Post-test implemented after the teaching experiment was used to understand students’ attitude towards mathematics learning, their learning effect and retention. Furthermore, the influence in their learning when students accepted different teaching ways was investigated. The major findings of the study were as follows: 1. The cooperative learning can upgrade the laerning efficiency for the junior high eighth graders in the learning topic of Square Root and approximate value. 2.
