In addition to physical declines, aging process also involved multiple psychological and social dimensions of losses, constituting elders’ life stresses and challenging their coping capacities. Those elders who failed to cope well would experience stress or in serious cases depressive mood, compromising their quality of life or life satisfaction. Social participations have long been regarded as one of the coping mechanism that may moderate the impact of stressors on depressive mood and life satisfaction. A review of literature has shown that most studies focus primarily on modeling factors associated with depressive moods and life satisfaction. Few have explored the moderating role of social participation. Purpose: The purposes of this study are two fold:(1) to describe the current state of depressive moods and life satisfaction in a nationally representative sample of elders; (2) to explore the role of social participation in moderating the impact of stressors on elders’ depressed mood and life satisfaction. Methods: This longitudinal study analyzed data retrospectively from the repository of "Taiwan's social life and physical and mental condition of the elderly long-term follow" set up by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and Statistics Department of the Executive Yuan's (Taiwan Longitudinal Study of Aging, TLSA). The repository was collected from a nationally representative sample of adults 65 and over. Data were analyzed, using IBM-SPSS version 20.0 statistical software package. Hierarchical multivariate regression was used to determine the role of social participation in moderating the impact of stressors on depressive mood and life satisfaction. Result: Hierarchical regression analysis showed that the model for depressive mood was significant. That is, the role of social participation was able to buffer the impact of the ADL on depressive mood. Those who changed their mode of social participation from active to inactive were able to cope better than their counterpart. Regression analysis with life satisfaction as dependent measure failed to reach the significant level of p<0.05. The difference of social participation in moderating the impacts on depressive mood and life satisfaction was discussed. Chang Hong Jer 張宏哲 2015 學位論文 ; thesis 104 zh-TW |
