The aims of this study were to explore the classifications of acute psychiatric inpatients’ inappropriate sexual behavior (ISB), definitions, case situations, nursing interventions (NI) and to confirm the nursing interventions’ relevance and feasibility. This study invited 20 nurses who provided clinical care in a psychiatric teaching hospital to participate in focus groups to collect their nursing experience. Content Analysis wew used in the data analyze. Researcher integrated the classifications of acute psychiatric inpatients’ ISB, definitions, case situations and the NIs, then confirmed the results of the analysis with the respondents in focus groups.
The results indecated seven ISBs, each behavior and the related NIs were described as follow:
1. "overt masturbation", the NIs included assess the appropriateness of masturbation, provide a separate environment, provide health education and valuate the effect after relieving sexual demand.
2. "touch others", the NIs included assess and prevent incentives, using positive response to regulate the patient’s behavior, formulate a behavioral convention, provide health education, medication and later prevention.
3. "overt intimacies", the NIs included focus on the intimate relationship between inpatients, guide precautions between the sexes, formulate a management policy between inpatients and visitors.
4."severe sexual pressure", the NIs included assess the risk factors of sexual pressure, provide health education, medication and later prevention.
5."sexual requests", the NIs included assess the aims of patient’s behavior, select the appropriate response to patient, provide health education and reach consistent attitude in the medical team.
6."exposed sexuality positions", the NIs included assess the situation of the exposed parts of sexuality, provide protective measures and provide health education.
7."sexual behavior among inpatients" , the NIs included assess the patient's sexual past history, prevent sexual behavior among inpatients, immediate disposal, behavioral restrictions, prevent unexpected pregnancy, later precautions, provide health education, medication and provide care of sexually transmitted diseases.
The results of this study can be applied to the acute psychiatric inpatients’ ISBs, and provide psychiatric nurses with a reference of assessment and nursing interventions.
