Background: The suicide rate of cancer patients in Taiwan was significantly higher than other countries in recent years.And the risk of suicide in cancer patients is 2.5 times general population. Previous researches found that cancer patients suffered from demoralization syndrome was associated with suicidal ideation, too.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was explore the relationships between distress,depression, demoralization syndrome and suicidal ideation in gynecologic cancer patients.
Method:This research took the sample of the gynecologic cancer patients from the hospital in Taipei and had received Institution Review Board(IRB) approval. The scales were used in this research are Distress Thermometer(DT), Demoralization Scale Mandarin Version(DS-MV), the Patient Health Questionnaire-9(PHQ-9), and the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation. The statistic date was analyzed with SPSS 20.0 for Windows.
Result: A total of one hundred individuals with gynecologic cancer met inclusion criteria. The prevalence of suicidal ideation in gynecologic cancer patients was 28%. The result of logistic regression showed that the stages of cancer and depression are significantly predicable for suicidal ideation. In a three-state model, the depression was an intermediate variation between demoralization and the suicidal ideation.
Conclusion: By cooperating those three scales of DT, DS-MV and PHQ-9 can accurately filter the potential gynecologic cancer patients.
