Based on the socioemotional wealth perspective, this study tries to compare the distinctive role of a foundation in specified institutional context. The establishment and the operation of a foundation is deeply rooted in a country’s culture and regulation, thus utilizing comparative method would be useful to figure out why and what different roles a foundation could act under different institutional contexts.  The results indicate that besides the role of charity, the foundation in Taiwan and France still play the role as policies promoter as well as the bridge that connect the family and local community. The motivation for a family owner to establish a foundation is usually based on the distinctive socioemotional wealth concern. Moreover, based on the socioemotional wealth perspective, because the founding fund in a foundation cannot be easy to transfer, establishing one or more foundations can be a beneficial way to accumulate the distinctive socioemotional wealth in a large family business group. This study provides a preliminary observation to understand the relative role of a foundation in distinctive embedded institutional environments.
