Through writing, Chen not only reflected on herself, recording her homeland and time but also defended gender rights, trying to overturn the distress and changing of her belonging era. Taking Chen Yulian as the study object, in this dissertation the writer probes into Chen’s unique life experiences by analyzing her texts. Also, from the contents, topics, writing styles, preface and postscripts of her work Poetry Drafts from the Xinfang Pavilion, the writer deliberates on how Chen, as a female, entered the dominant male dialect system to construct a world of knowledge familiar to her, how she turned writing into an access to prestige and expanding the social circle, and even how she made writing the practice of power, reshaping herself and revealing her true colors. This dissertation comprises six chapters—the preface, conclusion and four main chapters to discuss and analyze Chen Yunlian and her work Poetry Drafts from the Xinfang Pavilion. The second chapter tracks down Chen’s family circle to construct her family background and network. Chapter three and four look into the contents of her work Poetry Drafts from the Xinfang Pavilion. The writer classifies Chen’s works into several literary forms, and through the occurrence of certain subjects in her works, the writer observes how Chen manipulated creation and innovation in the traditional poetry and in the knowledge system of her familiar world. Chapter five reasons out how Chen molded herself with language and images and interprets the meaning of her works and her performance in terms of literary creation. The writer chooses the Qing Dynasty poetess Chen Yunlian as the study target, who has gradually received attention, yet out of whom relatively few studies has been made. It is hoped that the dissertation can provide some insight into how a poetess in the Dao Xian Reign Periods expressed herself and concern about her homeland.
