The research includes: experiences and feelings of the adult siblings in sandtray, their caregiving experiences, their sense of the role as a caregiver, and their views on their siblings with schizophrenia. Using purposive sampling, the researcher invited three adults who have siblings with schizophrenia to participate in this study. Each of them participated in three interviews. In each interview, firstly the researcher informed the participants of the content of the interview, and then invited them to create a sandtray image based on that content. Finally, the researcher and each participant examined the sandtray image, and each participant was asked about his or her experiences and feelings. After the data was collected, the researcher analyzed it by using the constant comparative method in qualitative research. Presented below are the major findings: 1. The sandtry image the caregiving siblings created varies with ages, the caregiving years, experiences, and life experiences; each sandtry image was presented in a unique way. 2. These adult siblings’ caregiving experiences are explored in two categories, including “family interaction between adult caregiving siblings and siblings with schizophrenia” and “the support in times of adversity.” 3. These adult siblings’ sense of the role as a caregiver is explored in four categories: “feelings of taking care of their siblings,” “the transition and process of the role as a caregiver,” “the caregiver’s hope for their siblings taking care of themselves,” and “the caregiver’s denial of caregiving responsibilities.” 4. These adult siblings’ views on their siblings’ illness are explored in three categories: “views on the siblings with schizophrenia,” “the understanding of the siblings’ inability to maintain a normal life,” and “social stigma.” Based on the results of the research, this thesis discusses and provides practical advice on counseling practices for future studies.
