From 1954 to 1958, Taiwan encountered two cross-strait crises. The atmosphere of war was strong in Taiwan in the 1950s, and the government mobilized human resources to maintain control over Taiwan’s stability. Considering their need to control Taiwan, the Nationalist government mobilized female human resources. The Nationalist government did this to create stratified structures of manpower and resources within Taiwan society to allow it to command and monitor the activities of these women groups and organizations, ensuring they work in accordance with the wartime system. This was done so that no organization that may threaten the regime or oppose the authority could be developed at the time. The people were kept under control within the anti-Communist and national restoration framework, so that political stability could be maintained. This study mainly focuses on literature review as its major research method, and the subjects of study are women magazines like China’s Women and Newsletter of Taiwan Women. China’s Women and Newsletter of Taiwan Women were published respectively by two relatively influential major civil women’s organizations - Women's Anti-Communist & Soviet Russia League of China and Taiwan Provincial Women’s Association. The main points of the study include: 1. How did women’s magazines create women’s value in the housekeeping domain in order to respond to the government’s policies; 2. Understand the ideal lifestyle shaped by the publications of the time through the women’s life knowledge conveyed by women magazines. This essay shows that the Nationalist government created a modern housewife image through the direction in women’s magazines’ showing how women should do their housework, and it involved women in the creation of a modern country. Furthermore, the impact of Western civilization on Taiwan life can be observed from the content of Taiwan’s women’s magazines in the 1950s. Keywords: Taiwan in the 1950s, China’s Women, Newsletter of Taiwan Women, housekeeping and life knowledge 吳玲青 博士 2015 學位論文 ; thesis 174 zh-TW
