According to the early maps and documents, we could get to know there were traditional villages at Shihjia in Qing dynasty. During Japanese Colonial Period, the landscape changed by Kaohsiung Harbor, Southward Policy, Urban Plannings. The agricultural and fishing villages transformed into an industrial zone. After WW2, it remained to be an industrial zone by U.S. Aid and Four-year Economic Development Plannings. Since 1980’s, it had been converted through the revolution of industrial technology, the moving of industrial settlement, the variation of transportantion, the awareness of environmental protection, the impact of international situations. The industrial zone then disappeared. By “Kaohsiung Multi-Function Commerce and Trade District” and “Asia’s New Bay Area In Kaohsiung”, the landscape starts changing again. Its new changes can be expected at Shihjia. To sum up, there was different landscapes in different periods, it piles up rich culture. We can have a preliminary understanding of Shihjia by realizing its landscape changing. Then, we will analyse the production of space in Shihjia’s industrial zone. The discovery of this study is: the space is transforming through domination in different periods. There are its unique spirit of place and mainstream industry in each period. It affects the distribution of space and industrial chains. Because we had military demands, it established Japanese Aluminum Company and brought chemical industry, mechanical engineering industry. After WW2, because we had human demands, it established Formosa Plastics Group, and brought plastics chemical industry, other chemical industry. Following deindustrialization, space is regenerated. It arises residential landscape, consumer landscape, business landscape, waterfront landscape. Facing the future, its conversion is optimistic. Besides, the disappearance of the industry zone at Shihjia, the precious industrial culture is also disappearing. The protection of industrial heritage is an important issue. How to win-win situation between the industrial heritage and the development of urban, it must be cautious. We must have passion for our places.
