Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the life planning and career planning for University Basketball Association (UBA) first division male basketball athletes through interviewing the current student athletes and graduates. The research method in this study was semi-structured interviews, participants were chosen from the first division male basketball athletes registered during 95 -102 academic year by using purposive sampling. 9 student athletes were chosen from the pool.
The results of this study were following:
1. Careers of male basketball players from UBA first division: the main reasons for participants choosing basketball as a career are outstanding sports performances, passion for basketball and influence of significant others. It is difficult for players to find the balance between intensive training and school works due to hardworking training. However, most participants did not regret their choices, and agree that basketball has huge impact on their personalities and characters.
2. Career planning before retiring from sports field: in order to prepare future careers, most players choose to study universities. In addition, most participants agree that sport has played an important role in their lives. The main reason for leaving this field is that the environment is not good enough and no opportunities.
3. Employment for retired players:The difficulties during employment are getting professional certificates and being lack of second skills.
4. Retiring and career planning: The employment status of non physical education related department graduates and career planning have high relevance. By contrast, physical education related graduates have low relevance with school team training for long periods of time and hardship of becoming formal teacher.
5. Suggestions to current basketball player: Get prepared and map out one’s future plan beforehand. Developing the second specialty and time management skill are also essential to successful future career planning.
