English abstract
The investigated the current status of and problems facing teacher curriculum leadership in junior high schools. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed to teachers who had served as junior high school subject leaders in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and 345 effective questionnaires were returned for an effective return rate of 86%. The main study tools used were the Subject leader curriculum leadership scale, Leadership difficulties for subject leaders scale, and Subject leader curriculum leadership strategies scale developed by the investigator. Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, One Way ANOVA, Pearson's product-moment correlation, and multiple stepwise regression were conducted on the participants' responses.
The research came to the following conclusions:
1. The current status of subject leaders' curriculum leadership was above average, among which, "curriculum management and monitoring" was the highest.
2. The current difficulties facing subject leaders' curriculum leadership were average, among which, "subject leaders" was the highest.
3. The current strategies for subject leaders' curriculum leadership were average, among which, "subject organization " was the highest.
4. With regards to subject leaders' curriculum leadership, those who had advanced degrees or worked in metropolitan areas better understood the subject goals and schools' missions; those who worked in metropolitan areas performed better in curriculum management and monitoring; and those who had volunteered for the position performed better in providing a supportive environment.
5. With regards to subject leaders' understanding of difficulties to curriculum leadership, those who graduated from a normal university had a better understanding of difficulties for subject leaders; a rotational appointment lead to better understanding of difficulties for subject members; and those who graduated from a normal university and a school size of 25-48 classes lead to subject leaders measures' better overall understanding of difficulties to curriculum leadership.
6. With regards to curriculum leadership strategies, those who had volunteered for the position, were both a teacher and the director, and had between 5 and 10 years experience had better subject leader strategies.
7. Overall subject leader curriculum leadership and overall understanding of leadership difficulties were slightly significantly negatively correlated. Overall subject leader curriculum leadership and overall strategies were moderately significantly positively correlated. Overall understanding of leadership difficulties and overall strategies were slightly significantly negatively correlated.
8. Subject leader curriculum leadership and strategies for leadership difficulties had predictive power; their predictive power for subject goals and schools' missions was the strongest.
Suggestions are given to subject leaders, schools, competent authorities on education, and future studies based on the results and findings of this study.
