The purpose is to find out if their sense of physical health, after entering college, are better than other students who have not participated in various serious leisure activities, and to see if the results are different when gender variable is added to the study. The study utilizes the Education Panel Survey data from the Taiwan Youth Project and puts them into regression analysis. According to the subject and question of this study, we find out that in the model which takes the impact of gender differences into account, the average of college boys’ sense of physical health is higher than that of girls, and participation in “sports dance” and “music” competitions during elementary school has positive impacts on sense of physical health during college. In the model without gender variable, the participation in “sports dance” and “music” competition during elementary school has positive influences on sense of physical health during college, and I also find out “arts and calligraphy” competition in elementary school has negative impacts on sense of physical health during college. Based on these results, I conclude that gender index is a prominent explanatory variable related to happiness in college, and omitting this important variable will lead to model specification errors and estimation bias of the impact of serious leisure. At last , we discuss the results of the study and provide suggestions and references for students, who may choose to participate in various activities with serious leisure quality, hoping that the activities they choose enable them to have the maximum benefits of serious leisure, both physically and mentally, while they’re busy studying.
