Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is one of renal replacement therapy for ESRD. Patients undergoing PD must experience an implant surgery of PD catheter. The complication of the procedure and the function of the catheter impact lots on the patient survival. Purpose:To analyze the postoperative complication rate of ESRD patients undergoing PD catheter implantation and its risk factor in a medical center. Method:This is a retrospective cohort study. We collected basic information and postoperative complications scenario of ESRD patients undergoing PD catheter implantation from 2002/04/01 to 2012/12/31 based on medical records. Result:There are 44.8% male and 55.2% female in 513 patients. The average age is 54 years (minimum age is 16 years old and the oldest is 88 years old). The main reason of ESRD is diabetes (29 %). The most common comorbidity is hypertension (79.8%). Patients suffered from up to four kinds of comorbidity. The highest incidence of postoperative complications is that of catheter related infections as 51.4%. There is no significant risk factor associated with overall postoperative complication rate found in this study. Conclusion:Catheter related infection is the most common postoperative complication of ESRD patients undergoing PD catheter implantation. In order to reduce the rate of catheter related infection, the health care team should make a precious effort on the patient education in how to care the PD catheter.
