| Summary: | 碩士 === 國立東華大學 === 藝術與設計學系 === 103 === The origin of ‘ark’ is the common theme of Christian art. It is not only used in painting or the carving ornamentation of church, but also become the contemporary design of the church architecture. It is worth studying the concept of building church when ‘ark’ is used to be the visual sign and symbolic meaning of church architecture. Also, the artistry of church itself and the difference of foreign ark church are worth studying.
Firstly, we study through many documents, and then also research the interpretation of ark from the old ancient priest. In addition, we find the symbolism of Christian sign and the usage of the symbol of the every period of church architecture as the basic theory of the research. Through the field research, we gain the history background and the concept of building church of six domestic ark churches and analyze each symbolic meaning. Therefore, we have concluded into two styles--- realistic and abstract of ark church, comparing each other’s presentation and artistry.
Realistic style of church both emphasize to decorate the church with obvious and recognizable sign and pattern to achieve the illustration of moral lesson. While abstract style of church emphasizes the abstract geometrical pattern and the metaphor of architecture sign, representing the spirit of religion through the effectiveness of art architecture.
Finally, we compare the foreign and domestic ark church and discover the differences between each other. Local geography, climates, economy and the acquiring of architecture skill become to the main effects of the localization of architecture. We discover that the western tradition ark shape of church transforms into boat shape in Taiwan.
In conclusion, the form of ark churches perform different style of architecture and meaning with each period geographical environment, humanistic background, social economy and architecture skill also the value judgment of leader and the thought of aesthetic.
