Kammermusik No.5, created in 1925, is viola concerto in form. It is a difficult piece which requires skillful techniques. The chamber music is composed of seven sub-pieces, which were finished during 1921-1927. Hindemith demonstrated his unique musical characteristics in the pieces. This thesis is centered on Hindemith and Kammermusik No.5. Through different stages of the musician’s life, the readers will know more about his unparalleled styles and impacts in education. The creation background of Kammermusik No.5, along with the analyses of the structures and skills, will be discussed. The chamber music will be interpreted by actual performance.
Hindemith is a very important composer for people who learn viola. A great deal of music composed by him has become must-play for viola performers. Nevertheless, Kammermusik No.5 is a piece that is rarely studied and performed. It is expected that more people would get to know it as well as the musician himself from the thesis.
