English language contract translation has existed for a very long time; however, there are not many in-depth investigations relating to English language contract translation quality, requirements and translation strategies. The purpose of the study is to examine the legal translation strategies and analyze its advantages and disadvantages in order to set a role model for English language contract translation. First of all, this study will explain the importance of equivalence in translation through Catford’s concept of equivalence, Nida and Taber’s four priorities of translation and Vermeer’s skopos theory. Following two contemporary legal translation theory scholars : Sarvevic’s new approach to legal translation and Stolze’s hermeneutic approach to legal translation elaborates the main points in legal translation. With literature review of English language contract origin, the principles of legal English and the competence of a legal translator deeply explore the requirements of legal translation. Moreover, this study applies five legal translation strategies proposed by Wang (2008): addition and deletion, repetition, negative to affirmative method, passive voice into active voice and conversion to examining twenty examples and analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of those strategies. The twenty examples are extracted from master sale and procurement agreement, joint venture agreement, license agreement and confidentiality agreement. In light of the discussion and application of the study, a legal translator should be equipped with basic legal knowledge, translation skills and understanding of legal terminologies. Aside from aforementioned requirements, he or she should also exercise appropriate legal translation strategies in order to produce English language contract translation which is equivalent not only in meaning but also in the legal effect.
