Summary:碩士 === 國立彰化師範大學 === 英語學系 === 103 === The thesis attempts to explore the application of English novels to junior high school English teaching. The researcher wants to know whether students promote their knowledge of school bullying through reading The Chocolate War. Besides, the researcher adopts both the Grammar Translation Method and the Communicative Language Teaching Approach to investigate whether students gain knowledge of elements of fiction, enlarge vocabulary, gain knowledge of the school bulling from the novel. The thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter one is introduction, which explains motivation of the thesis, appropriateness of teaching literature to junior high school students, appropriateness of teaching The Chocolate War, purposes and research questions, biographical background of Robert Cormier, and significance of this study. Chapter two is literature review of school bullying. Chapter three is literature review of school bullying in the novel. Chapter four is methodology of teaching experiment. Chapter five is results and findings of the teaching experiment.
