Abstract
Base on the changing trends of family structure and society as a whole, elderly abandoned issues are being discussed more constantly than ever before. Elder protection social workers need well communications and professional intervention plans to interact with adult children who abandoned their elder parents. It is necessary to provide good care to these elder parents, as well as support adult children to provide care, in order to cope with the elder family care issues.
This study aimed to explore the early relationships between adult children and elderly parents impacting on the intentions to provide care to their elderly parents. Furthermore, via this study to understand the resources and expectations that those adult children needed to care for their elderly parents, and the assistances that elderly protection social workers needed to provide. This study also brought up some suggestions in policy, practice and academic perspectives in order for better understanding of social work professionals and public in general.
The research method is qualitative method by using purposive sampling to collect data from 9 research respondents. The main findings of this study were as follows:
1. The early relationships between adult children and elderly parents have crucial impacts on the intentions to provide care to their elderly parents.
2. The elderly parents who had terrible interaction experiences with their adult children would not expect filial piety duties and obligations from their adult children.
3. In the care processes of those elder parent abandoned cases, elder protection social workers were as resources providers and companions to those adult children.
4. Economic supports and Psychological companions were equally important to both adult children and elderly parents.
5. For those adult children, it is shameful to use lawsuits to protect them from not to care for their elderly parents. As well as, they were more passive toward using related law protection.
Finally, based on the findings of this study, researcher suggested that the elder protection policy about abandoned cases should reexamine the suitability in Taiwan society. In addition, the implications for research, practice and policy of elder protection were discussed.
