With ancient documents, the family genealogy, land contracts and the field research, the relevant information will be analyzed with hope to reproduce the orginal family history and the development of the district.
Jinzhang Wei ,the 17th descendant, native in Shalian Fort Keya Keng(now Meilin Township, Najing County, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province), followed his uncle, Sihhong Wei, 16th descendant, crossed the Taiwan Strait and immigrated to Tsau Chien ditch, Taichung(now Longjing). In Jinzhang’s teen age, he had been in school for three years; then moved to Fengyuan and stettled in Jinzhang Wei afterwards. Jinzhang, once employed by a herb dealer, made a little fortune because of diligence, married Yang and had six children. He was also quite good at herb trading and became a man of property, founding Wei’s wealth.
The Wei family had not only successful farmland cultivation, but also considerable influence in local places. Wenhua Wei, the 18th descendant, joining the civil service examination, got the degree in Qing Dynasty. He was as well a Hoko and a doctor in Fengyuan during the period of Japanese Occupation. My great grandfather, Zhicheng Wei, the 19th descendant, was a Chinese medicine doctor. Geng Wei, the 20th, ran Tongren Hospital, which is still in business.
Moreover, Zhaozhou Wei was a famous doctor and a policeman belonging to Guangyu Sect in Qing Dynasty . The Wei family was pretty active in local affairs until Japanese Occupation. Quite a lot family members engaged in herb wholesale business. As for cultural and educational part, my great grandfather,making great contribution in local education, established Shang Wei private school in Sazhang where Fengjia Qiu also received his education.
From editing the family genealogy to the foundation of property-owning ancestral worship associations, the Wei family, the Changchou immaigrants,shows great respect to the ancestors. The organization keep connection with
each other through the reunion in the ancestral house and the worship ceremony.
The thesis is the threshold of combination of family history and cultivation in Fengyuan district. It enables to make clear the interaction between the Wei family and the local society from the late Qing Dynasty, Japanese Occupation, to the R.O.C. regime.
