Changes in food and water intake as well as fecal excretion were observed. Our results showed that the average food intake was 0 g-1.24 g per hour. It was found that the feeding behavior was continued even in the sleeping period. The amount of food intake in the active period was higher than that in the sleeping period. The ratio of the food intakes in the active and sleep periods was found to be 5:3. Regarding the influences of feeding time and fasting time on blood lipids, the animal group (fed for 16 hours followed by fasting for 12 hours) had a lower (p < 0.05) level of serum total cholesterol compared with the group (fed for 8 hours followed by fasting for 12 hours). After feeding for 8 hours, fasting for 12 hours resulted in a significant (p < 0.05) decrease of serum total cholesterol. Animal group (fed for 16 hours followed by fasting for 12 hours) was found to have a decreased (p < 0.05) level of serum total cholesterol than those only fed for 16 hours. Regarding the level of serum triglycerides, variations in the feeding time did not result in any apparent changes among different animal groups. However, the treatment of fasting for 12 hours would result in a decrease (-47 mg/dL) of serum triglyceride. After feeding hamsters with xylooligosaccharides, the effects of food intake, water intake, and fecal sampling time on the fecal samples were determined every 4 hour. It was observed that the food and water intakes during the whole experimental period were similar in pattern but the values in each 4 hour interval were varied. Therefore, it was concluded that the variations in feeding time and specimen collection time should be kept as low as possible. This allowed the experimental animals to adapt to environment changes, hence to increaseconsistency and reduce error in the analyses of blood, feces, or other biological specimens.
