碩士 === 明道大學 === 國學研究所 === 103 === Abstract As a commonly seen place of worship, temples in Taiwan have also become one of the most popular tourist attractions in recent years. Tainan Orthodox Luerh-men Holy Mother Temple was completed in 1981, when there was a surging development in calligraphy. A great deal of thought went into the couplets in the temple, which is like an open gallery with the display of the calligraphers’ great artworks. This paper is the study of the calligraphy of couplets in Tainan Orthodox Luerh-men Holy Mother Temple. Chapter One is the overview of the whole study. It explains the motivation, the purpose of the research and the literature review serves as the basis for the research framework. Chapter Two is the brief history of Tainan Orthodox Luerh-men Holy Mother Temple and its couplets. Chapter Three depicts the calligraphers’ process of creation and their styles and achievement in Chinese calligraphy. Chapter Four discusses the expression of the temple couplets according to the fonts of the calligraphy. Through the understanding of the calligraphers’ achievement and status, Chapter Five, the conclusion, is to highlight the artistic value of the couplets in Tainan Orthodox Luerh-men Holy Mother Temple, with the hope that the authorities concerned would pay more attention to the preservation of the cultural heritage and promotion of calligraphy.
