Language is used as a communication tool among people. Regarding to study of pragmatics, it is used in conversation not only depending on structural and linguistic knowledge but also on the context of situation of the conversation. This is better known as speech acts. The term speech act was first introduced by Austin, which he divided into three categories namely locutionary acts, illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts. Later this theory was revised by John Searle who is Austin’s pupil that specifies illocutionary speech acts into five categories namely representative, directive, expressive, commisive and declarative. The language is also influenced by factors such as culture, age, gender, education, speech community, environment, status etc. In the earlier, the researcher already know that language between men and women are different, and the difference is mainly due to women''s lower status in most of society community. The expert who first raises this problem is Robin Lakoff who calls women as powerless language. These results were followed by other language experts and led to many theories that discuss these differences. It has been mentioned previously that the language is also influenced by the culture, environment and society community. In different society communities will conduct someone to use of appropriate vocabulary or sentence depends on context situation. This is also applied to the different environment and cultures which have a different vocabulary when mentioning to the same thing for example: the meaning of paman in Indonesian language is uncle but in mandarin language this could be mean舅舅(mother’s brother) or叔叔 (father’s younger brother) or伯父(father’s elder brother) or姨丈(husband of mother’s sister) or姑丈(husband of father’s sister). The author already saw a lot of study about language differences between men and women, but few are talking about language differences in women with different cultural backgrounds. It is interesting to see the similarities and differences speech acts between Indonesian women and Chinese women. In this thesis, the author tries to answer the question above by researching the Indonesian movie with title "Love for Share" and Mandarin movie with title "Raise of the Red Lantern". This study is to research the women''s status and their speech style under polygamy marriage, also to discover what kind of influence to their speech style. This study hopes to find the similarities and differences speech style among women with different cultural backgrounds. Fu-Tsai Hsieh 謝富在 2015 學位論文 ; thesis 89 zh-TW
