The test strip is a disposable, one-time medical supplies. Improper installation of the test strip will affect the follow-up blood collecting and can also cause the inactivation of test strip, which lead to the failure of collecting blood. In order to make the operating process of the glucometer more smoothly for the elderly, this study is based on the physiological and psychological demands of the elderly, and combined with affordance theory through practices and interviews, so to extract the design principles of glucose test strip and propose innovative glucose test strip. Then through the usability test to verify whether the innovative glucose test strip is better than the commercial one using by the elderly. The results indicated both two types of innovative glucose test strip were better than the commercial one regardless of the operating time, the number of errors and system usability scale scores. Therefore, this study determines that it is effective in adopting affordance theory in designing the disposable medical item. It recommends that the future design direction of the glucose test strip: 1.The test strip only shows electrode strips, directional arrow and position of the blood collecting, and avoid using meaningless pattern or Logo printed. It can cause misguided to the use of other symbols as functional affordance. 2.The indication arrows are the conventional affordance for common understanding by the elderly. The test strip without blood observation window can be changed the visual cue of physical affordance with indicative pointing arrow to help guiding the blood collecting. 3.The shape of physical affordance in test strip that guide movement of blood collecting is different from the whole shape and with clear color allows the user to identify the correct blood collection location. 4.Using physical affordance can achieve the purpose in limiting the reverse insertion glucometer and it’s easy for handheld with increased size of the tail of the glucose test strip.
