The study was conducted by means of questionnaire surveys. In Changhua County, 529 elementary school teachers were randomly investigated. The data were analyzed by computing descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson product-moment correlation. The results of the study indicated that teachers’ personality traits differed significantly by different background variables. The female teachers tended to be more neurotic than male teachers. The old and the senior teachers tended to be more conscientious and agreeable than the young and the junior teachers. The teachers with master's degree above and English teachers had more extroverted and open traits than the teacher graduated from normal schools. The teachers who served in the small-scale schools tended to be more neurotic and extroverted than the teachers served in the large-scale schools. Teachers’ job stress also differed significantly by different background variables. The female, younger and junior teachers had evidently more pressure than other teachers. The teachers graduated from normal schools and in large-scale schools also had evidently more pressure than other teachers, too. Meanwhile, there was significantly negative correlation between teachers’ personality traits and job stress. But the more neurotic characteristics a teacher had, the more work pressure presented. According to research results, conclusions and concrete recommendations are proposed for the administrative authority for education, schools, elementary school teachers and future research.
