This is one of the processes to manufacture a catalytic converter. Approximate circumference method, inscribed triangle method and inscribed quadrilateral method are applied to develop the outer diameter measuring machine, and their accuracies and efficiencies of measurement are investigated as well. The laser displacement sensors (LK-H150) are fixed in the machine to measure the distance from the sensor to the surface of rotating workpiece. With the measured distances, the diameter and eccentric distance of workpiece are then calculated by using the three methods. It is revealed experimentally that, since the approximate circumference method is an approximate method, the more are the measured distances, the more accurate are the diameter (Dp) and eccentric distance (dp) of workpiece; while, the inscribed triangle and inscribed quadrilateral methods are both exact method, Dp and dp are calculated accurately with only three and four measured distance datum, respectively. To ensure the accuracy of roundness of the workpiece, a few measured data sets could be randomly chosen to calculate and obtain the average value. The error and cylindricity are also inspected.
